Batman or ABBA?
Contrasting cinema styles did battle last week when two potential blockbusters opened in movie theaters. I was amused this past weekend to hear about all the excitement and anticipation for the newest Batman film, The Dark Knight, which seemed to win out with movie fans (and their money), although the feel-good musical Mamma Mia! drew well, too. Some people really couldn't wait to see the new Batman flick. One friend's son went to a midnight showing! Of course, if you saw either one and want to share your thoughts, I'm listening.
Wine lovers, too, take different approaches to their appreciation of the product. Some people can’t wait to try the hot new wine, and others are content with more esoteric options, or will wait until the "hot" wine is more readily available. Some of my friends (and readers) can't wait to weigh in on the hottest, newest wines, and fancy themselves critics (which they are), while others are happy to taste them when they can. Where do you fall on this scale?
For me, both the Batman and ABBA movies had their appeal (though ultimately I haven’t seen either one, yet). And in the world of wine, the range of styles, the abundant diversity and the variations on themes afford us a greater opportunity than ever to enjoy all that's out there. And it forces us to pay attention, lest we lose sight of what's happening in our wine world. Over the weekend I had some great Grenache-laced reds from France (Éric Texier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Improbable Réserve 2001) and California (2005 Ampelos Bryon Vineyard) and some delicious Cabernets from Napa Valley, all very different, yet distinctive and beautifully crafted. I find it hard to believe people sometimes insist that all Napa Cabernets taste alike.
One more note about movies and wine: A copy of Bottle Shock (due Aug. 8 in theaters) just landed on my desk a few minutes ago. More on that soon.
