Despite all the bad weather, the Right Bank provided some good to outstanding wines today from barrel. And it appears that Pomerol is the best region of all in 2007. I still have to taste wines this weekend from Pessac-Leognan and other parts of the Graves – especially first growth Haut-Brion, which some say is excellent. But Pomerol offers the most in fruity, well-proportioned and long wines in 2007. Some of my favorites included Lafleur, Pétrus, Le Pin, La Conseillante, Lafleur-Pétrus, Vieux-Château-Certan, Hosanna, and Trotanoy.
St.-Emilion’s Ausone also stood out today. It produced a dark-colored, very perfumed and rich young red for the vintage. Alain Vauthier, the owner of Ausone, was pretty upbeat about the vintage, which is a bit strange. But he said that 2007 was not as "catastrophic" as people think. He said that there were problems with mildew, rain and cold weather during the growing region, but it was nothing too extreme. The biggest problem with the growing season was not enough sunshine. Little suntraps, such as the hillside vineyards of Ausone, produced the best wines in 2007. And opening up the leaf canopies to optimize the sunlight in September helped ripen the grapes.
I'm not sure it's that simple. The only generalizations I can make about 2007 is that the reds are weak in quality with a few exceptions, and the whites, both dry and sweet, are of very good to excellent quality. I can’t wait to finish tasting the dozen or so barrel samples of 2007 Satuernes over the weekend, as well as a number of dry whites such as Haut-Brion, Laville Haut-Brion, Smith-Haut-Laffite, and Domaine de Chevalier. These should be great.
In fact, I have to run now and taste samples of Yquem as well as Cheval Blanc. So, talk to you later ...
