Today was a reality check on 2007. I tasted a number of very good reds, including Margaux, Palmer, Rauzan-Segla, and Pichon-Baron, but the rest of the 60 or so reds were inconsistent in quality at best. Many were lean, diluted or short on the palate.
The 2007 doesn’t look to be a serious vintage. In fact, it is most likely the worst year since 1999. I think it is wishful thinking for Bordeaux vintners to say that 2007 is like 2006 or 2004. I even heard a couple make comparisons to 2005! That’s a joke, or else they really messed up their 2005s!!
Granted, I haven't tasted many Right Bank wines yet. I plan to focus on them beginning tomorrow. So maybe the 2007 vintage will turn out to be better than it seems right now.
Jean-Luc Zuger of Malescot-St.-Exupéry is not a bullshitter. His 2007 is an honest red with pleasant floral and berry character, medium body, light tannins and a fresh finish. It’s already very attractive. "You can't look for power when there never was any," he said. “It is what it is. It’s not bad. It’s not water.”
As I said yesterday, the good wines of the vintage are for wine drinkers, not wine investors. These are young wines that will make very nice clarets, as my English wine trade friends would say. That means that there are no "blockbusters" or "monumental" wines out there – at least so far. And I don't expect to find any. The good 2007s will be good for drinking on release, or a year or two after.
One nice point about the top wines of 2007 is that they are very representative of their terroirs as well as appellations. The St.-Estèphes are racy and spicy. The St.-Juliens are perfumed and balanced, and the Margauxs are fruity and pretty. You get the idea.
I think many people were very careful in their winemaking in 2007 They didn’t try to extract too much in their winemaking because they knew what fruit they had was very fragile. Balance and harmony were a key point in 2007.
