I visited with a friend the other day. She’s keenly into wine, with the taste, income, curiosity, brains and lifestyle to enjoy the finest wines from all over the world. She attends all kinds of wine events, from Wine Spectator’s Grand Tour to the ZAP tasting, and is a member of several wine clubs.
Ours was a casual conversation, and at one point we talked about what sells wine. My friend seeks out Wine Spectator issues covering wines she likes at the newsstand. (Because she’s not a subscriber, she misses out on many of the ratings we have, not to mention the range of ratings, which extends from the perfection of 100 points to disaster). Still, probably the biggest selling points for people like her are wine ratings, along with word of mouth and the endless pit for opinions on wine that the Internet has become. Feature articles in whatever medium can help, and there are probably many other vehicles for recognition or endorsement that I’m ignoring.
Yet usually the bottom line is that wineries that easily sell all their wines sell them with ease because they make good wines and price them appropriately. Conversely, wineries that have trouble selling wines do so because they need to make better wines and price them appropriately.
Wine drinkers are too savvy to get hoodwinked by wines that don’t taste good, or great, and everyone is getting smarter when it comes to parting with their money. I’m not sure which is easier to detect: an ordinary wine or an overpriced one.
