Looking for a gift for the wine geek who has everything? Forget about crystals that automatically reset the wine’s inner biological clock at its peak, or the latest gadget to preserve any precious drops of the latest cult wine (at my house, there are no leftovers).
For the well-read wine snob or budding enophile in your life, why not give them a book that educates and delights. In Desert Island Wine (Ambeli Press, 189 pages, $15), Miles Lambert-Gócs pokes fun at the world of wine with a wide-ranging set of short stories.
I know I take wine a little too seriously at times (remember, I get paid to do that). This tongue-in-cheek little tome reminds me that wine should be enjoyable, something to remove stress, not create it.
Whether it’s a CNN interview with Dionysus, a contemporary reporting to Thomas Jefferson about the Virginia wine scene, a legendary wine counterfeiter, or wine advice from Mr. Corky, Lambert-Gócs plumbs the past and the future for his wine-themed topics.
His knowledge of the Classical world and Greek wines is evident. I have to admit a lot of the references to ancient Greece were lost on me, but because he wears his knowledge well, the essays remain light and lively. It’s especially humbling to see his proof that many of today’s wine neuroses—on filtration for example—have been around for millennia.
Lambert-Gócs leaves us with a serious piece of research. He theorizes that the roots of Cabernet Sauvignon lie in ancient Greece, providing ampelographical, linguistic and historical evidence. All that’s missing is the DNA link.
As much for the literary-minded as the wine lover, this would make a great stocking stuffer.
