I had dinner last night at what might be considered a Fort Knox of old Bordeaux, the wine merchants of Mahler-Besse in city of Bordeaux. The small firm has become the torchbearer for fine old bottles from the region. If an old bottle of Bordeaux has the Mahler-Besse strip label on it, you can be assured that it has been kept in perfect condition in its cellar and, more than likely, it was bought from the château, shipped to its cellar, and never moved again until being sold. This is why I know wine merchants and collectors are ready to pay a premium for wines from Mahler-Besse. They have not traveled around the world like many old bottles sold ...
I was walking through MB’s cellar and I was amazed at the thousands of cases of amazing things –stacks of 2000s, 1989s, 1982s, 1961s, 1945s, 1929s, 1928s, and even 1900s and older. But the cellar was also packed with 2005s.
And Ferdinand Mahler-Besse, the 30-year-old representing the new generation of the company, says they have had unprecedented demand. Check out my video. In fact, he said that they had to sell a large part of their allocations for 2005 to meet demand from their clients who have supported them over the years. And they had to turn away a lot of new business. (It’s certainly not going to be the same in 2007!)
This was the case with most key wine merchants around the world that deal in Bordeaux. Everyone wanted to buy some 2005, even though many of the wines were the most expensive ever for young reds, whites and sweeties. But they are going to be worth it in most cases! I promise you that, especially after I have already tasted 450 wines and there are so many amazing ones.
That said, however, you will not have to spend a fortune to understand and to experience the excellent quality of the vintage. There are going to be hundreds of outstanding wines for $20 to $50 a bottle that we are all going to love, and many of the wines are still waiting to be sold in Bordeaux, according to Ferdinand.
It’s my job to find them and pass on the information to you.
Many 2005s are already in the market, but the majority of the big names will not be shipped until early next year. I bet you can’t wait to get your hands on them ...
