Looking at close to 1,000 samples of 2005 Bordeaux that you have to taste in about two weeks is a daunting experience. I had to take a deep breath when I arrived on Saturday at the hotel Les Sources de Caudalie, just outside of Bordeaux, and walked into my tasting room. Check out my video and see for yourself.
A few days into it now, I can say that many great wines exist. I have already scored a handful a perfect 100 points. And there are hundreds of outstanding ones. That’s for sure.
It’s hard to generalize at this stage, since I have only tasted a couple of hundred wines so far. But it’s obvious that 2005 is the great vintage that we have all hoped for. It produced excellent wines across the board, from the top châteaux to the small wine estates. This is the sign of a truly great vintage, when everything is excellent quality for what it is.
The first thing that strikes me is that the wines have beautiful aromas. They are so fruity and floral. And each wine from its respective appellation shows its true character on the nose. The Pessacs are earthy, stony and rich. The Margauxs are floral and fruity, with raspberry character, while the St. Estephes are spicy with sweet tobacco and fruit character. You get the idea.
On the palate, the wines are concentrated yet balanced, with ripe and refined tannins that caress your palate. And there is a fresh and vibrant acidity underlying all the wines. I am thinking that many of the wines remind me of a cross of the ultra-ripe 2003s and the super-fine and fresh 2000s. But it’s early days into my tasting.
I can’t say that all wines are best in 2005. That means that some estates may have produced better wines in 2000 or 2003. But I'm sure that no credible producer made a bad 2005. They would have had to try to make a bad wine in 2005! The wines are so exciting to taste!!
Stay tuned for more. I am going back to taste now. Wish me luck.
