Champagne Pommery will release two new cuvées in the United States early next year.
The Brut Blanc de Blancs Summertime NV and Brut Blanc de Noirs Wintertime NV are new blends from Pommery’s vice president and winemaker Thierry Gasco. I tasted them with Gasco two weeks ago in New York.
The blanc de blancs is rich and creamy yet fresh, with citrus and hazelnut flavors and a refined, clean finish. To achieve the fresh, elegant style consistent with the Pommery philosophy, Gasco sourced grapes from 10 different crus in the Côte des Blancs (30 percent), Montagne de Reims (40 percent), Pommery’s estate vineyards in Reims (15 percent) and Mont de Berru (15 percent). Mont de Berru is a vineyard area to the east of Reims where Gasco likes the Chardonnay for its grapefruit and citrus flavors.
The blanc de noirs is made from 75 percent Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and Petite Montagne de Reims and 25 percent Pinot Meunier from Vallée de la Marne and Vallée de l’Ardre. The Pinot Meunier contributes lightness to the wine. “The problem was that I wanted to make a light blanc de noirs, without too much body, so I avoided Bouzy,” explained Gasco, citing a cru known for its full-bodied Pinot Noir. “For me, with this Champagne, we are at the limit of the Pommery style.”
I liked it for its light berry and cherry notes, round yet fresh profile, biscuity flavor and long finish.
Gasco was looking to increase the range of Champagnes at Pommery and decided to create a blanc de blancs and blanc de noirs as “non-vintage wines, in the same spirit of Brut Royal,” the house’s flagship NV Champagne. Pommery had 4 different Champagnes in its range when Gasco joined the house in 1992. Since then, he has increased the number of labels to 12.
The prices have not been determined, but the two new cuvées will sell for more than the Pommery Brut Royal NV, which retails for $42.
Pommery will also introduce a vintage-dated Gold Pop, which we did not taste during our meeting. From the 2002 harvest, it spent 3 years on the lees.
