Labor Day Weekend used to be different. It once signaled the start of the wine grape harvest in Napa and Sonoma, but some folks are already knee-deep in this year’s grape stomp.
Labor Day used to be the end of summer, as in the last day for kiddies to frolic in the lake or pool before dusting off their lunch pails and heading back to class. Around here the first week of school has already come and gone.
Labor Day Weekend has always been one of those milestone holidays for me. It’s a time when you put another candle on the birthday cake, only in my case it’s a lot of candles, as in north of 50 but still safely south of 60.
Not that I’m complaining. It’s been a fun summer and there’s still lots to look forward to, including next week’s vacation, which is easy to take this time of year if you don’t need to babysit ripening grapes.
It’s been a summer of extremes in many ways, and I mean that in a good way. I’ve gone from the sandy, sunbathing beaches of San Diego to Abalone, diving in Mendocino to a Rocky Mountain High, riding my trail bike from Aspen to Woody Creek Tavern to hoist a beer in memory of Hunter S. Thompson. Forgot how thin and fresh the air is there but the mountains are spectacular.
I’ve gone from deep-sea albacore angling off Mexico’s Baja coast to whitewater rafting on the Roaring Fork River to fly-fishing for trout in a serene stream flowing from the lake at Maroon Bells, outside Aspen.
One night in Aspen I savored a flashback moment as I watched Dickie Betts and his band celebrate the great guitar spirit of the Allman Brothers Band. Sixteen hours later, I sat outdoors at the Aspen Music Festival for a pair of performances. The Concerto for violin by Nicholas Maw was followed by Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4.
One day I had lunch with Mac and Lil MacDonald at their Greens Cook-off, and three nights later, a formal dinner at the new Restaurant at Meadowood, which was excellent.
I’m not ready to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall just yet.
