In Wine Spectator's Aug. 31 issue, which just hit newsstands, we announce the winners of our 2007 Restaurant Awards. In this annual program, we recognize establishments throughout the world with top wine programs, and this year 3,955 restaurants received a nod from us.
I'd like to give kudos to Palais Coburg in Vienna and the French Laundry in Napa for achieving our top honor this year—the Grand Award—along with the hundreds of new winners and thousands of successful repeat winners.
By building a successful wine program, restaurants set themselves apart from the pack, whether they're offering a small bistro list or a cellar packed with thousands of bottles. As wine lovers, we appreciate restaurateurs who go the extra mile to offer patrons good wine.
I'd also like to give kudos to my colleague Nathan Wesley, who assumed day-to-day management of the program this past year. It was a task I handled for 10 years, and as the program grew each year, it became necessary to bring someone else in to handle the gig full-time. Nathan has done this job admirably. (I'm still involved in judging new entries and examining potential Grand Award candidates.)
WineSpectator.com has also launched a newly revamped Restaurant Search that you can use to find this year's winners by location, wine strength, wine pricing, cuisine type, award level and corkage policy. You'll also discover new interactive features such as user ratings and reviews (you can submit your own) and maps with driving directions.
Each year the program elicits a number of responses (positive and negative) from our readers. We strive to take them all into account as we try and improve the program each year. As usual, I'm going to take the brunt of your commentary here on my blog and hopefully I'll be able to answer whatever questions you might have.
Before you make a post, you might want to refer to the story that accompanies the listings in the August issue. If you are a restaurant with queries such as "How do I enter next year?" or "When do I get my certificate?" you can find the answers in our How to Enter the Restaurant Awards section of the site, instead of posting those questions on this blog.
Thanks, and fire away!
