Today was a good day—the kind that puts me in a good mood.
I know what you're thinking: How could I ever not be in a good mood when I get to taste wine for a living? Well, sometimes it's not glamorous—like when one of the tasting coordinators tells me, "Hey, we've got 20 Chilean Merlots lined up for you today..."
Of course, if you go into a tasting in a bad mood it will effect how you taste. So I always try to think positively as I sit down for my flight of the day. But in the end, not all tastings leave me in a good mood. That was not the case today, however, not by a long shot.
I tasted nearly three-dozen '05 Châteauneuf-du-Papes—my first major tasting of the bottled wines since taking my final informal look at them during my most recent trip. They were really showing well, with fresh, racy structure and lots of beautiful, pure fruit. The fruit was so delightful, I was even finding loganberry and linzertorte notes in some of the wines, along with the usual Châteauneuf-du-Pape profile of raspberry, plum and cassis. The minerality was there, too, with lots of graphite and iron, but it was the fruit that was taking center stage today.
It got me wondering whether there’s a biodynamic calendar that can be referenced somewhere on the Internet (I couldn’t find one) that would let me know if today was a ‘fruit day’. The biodynamic school of thought is that some days are fruit days, while others are root days, etc., as the lunar calendar moves through the zodiac. So some days are good for tasting, others are good for planting...
Some days a wine shows well, some days it doesn’t. While there's got to be a reason for it, it will probably never be quantified. All I know is, today was a Châteauneuf-du-Pape day—and not one corked sample to boot! And that put me in a good mood.
