In the spirit of brevity, with hot weather upon us, now is the most dangerous time of year to ship or receive wine. Heat is wine’s greatest enemy, and even a few minutes of sizzling sunshine can ruin your prized possessions.
I know most of you are aware of this. Still, wines are shipped to our Napa office in sweltering heat, and in the past few weeks I’ve been concerned that some of the wines I’ve tasted have been cooked, meaning the fruit is vapid. I also see tourists putting cases in their car trunks and I hope they won’t let the wine sit for long.
Your options for shipping wine this time of year are limited. You could chill down your wine, have it shipped for overnight delivery and hope that it doesn’t get stuck in the heat somewhere along the line.
If someone ships you wine, examine the bottle carefully. If wine is seeping out, or the bottle feels warm to the touch, it’s likely a victim of excessive heat. Let the wine cool down and settle for a few days before you taste it to determine whether it's cooked.
If you receive cooked wine, you may be able to get a replacement bottle or case, and have a word with the person who shipped it in the heat. If one bottle from a case is cooked, there’s no point in cellaring the others.
Most importantly, make sure you’re not shipping or receiving in the heat.
