Auction Napa Valley is taking center stage in Napa Valley this week. There are lots of events, dinners, tastings, open houses (with still more tastings) and the live auction itself on Saturday night.
For many people, if not most, you have to register (and pay) to attend, and most of the events have already sold out. But there’s one event that everyone can attend, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s the annual bring-your-own-half-bottle lunch gathering on Wednesday at Taylor’s Refresher, in St. Helena. (It’s a parody of Wine Spectator’s Bring-Your-Own-Magnum party, an invitation-only event held later that day at Tra Vigne.)
The mixer at Taylor's is a casual noontime shorts-and-T-shirt-type affair (it should be in the 80s this week). I went to it last year, arriving early, but the party didn’t kick into high gear until after 1. I'm told it was still going until close to 3 p.m. You order lunch, pop your corks (or twisties) and dine on the picnic tables in the garden behind the popular eatery.
I had a great time last year, running into old friends and winemakers and meeting lots of new folks. And wine flowed like water. I saw everything from rosés to cult classics and plenty of large-format bottles as well. No shortage of wine whatsoever.
If you’re in Napa Valley on Wednesday and anywhere near Taylor’s, it’s the place to be.
