I’m torn. I can’t decide whether I’m more surprised or more impressed by Beverages & More’s new policy to accept all returned wines. OK, I'm both.
This California wine retail chain has done the unthinkable: It will replace any bottle of wine (even if it's been opened), or refund your money, if you're not satisfied with a purchase you've made there. While that policy might sound extreme, the bottom line is that the company wants your repeat business. So they're effectively guaranteeing your wine-buying satisfaction.
I’m sure there are plenty of bugs to be worked out. What happens if you purchased a wine a year ago only to find out it’s corked? Or after a year you find out it’s simply undrinkable?
In fairness, many retailers do send wines returned by their customers back to the winery for new bottles. But many others don’t, even if the wine is corked or spoiled, in which case most of us believe the producer should replace the wine.
There are those of us who would like to see the industry adopt what might loosely be called a wine drinker’s bill of rights, and I think this new policy plays into that. Ultimately, it's a healthy strategy, as it's geared toward customer satisfaction and education. Care to share your thoughts?
