A while back, I wrote about some of the differences between the way men and women think about and approach wine.
Now I’m worried that I may have grossly underestimated some of those discrepancies. It turns out that not only are many men shameless point-chasing, label drinking, know-it-alls who equate price with quality, but it’s worse than that. Far worse. We’re liars.
This isn’t me talking. I'm referring to a poll conducted by YouGov, a London-based market research agency, and reported on by Life Style Extra, an e-zine that covers finance, news and entertainment in the UK. A reader sent me a link to the article yesterday morning, and according to the website, the poll reveals that one in four men try to impress their friends or dates by pretending to be “wine buffs.”
Sounds like these guys are wine bluffs.
The poll also indicates that these wannabe wine geeks really don’t know much about the great grape juice as its popularity soars. (In fairness, the poll revealed that some women bluff, too, according to Life Style Extra, but not as often as men.)
I'm not terribly surprised by these findings, having been a male my whole life. But then I read that more than one-third of the men polled refuse to let their partner choose wine in a restaurant. C'mon fellows, lighten up and loosen up and stop the con game. You’re only fooling yourselves.
Wine will always be intimidating. Let's not add to that anxiety. Let's admit that we all have plenty to learn and enjoy the shared experience.
Guys, back off on the wine chicanery and pass the wine list to someone who knows something about wine—the woman next to you.
