This morning at the gym, I worked out alongside an old friend. He's a great chef who now travels worldwide for one of Napa Valley’s big wine companies to put on food and wine pairings and demonstrations.
He’s off on a three-week tour that will take him to Canada, and then across the pond to London. From there, he’s headed to Florence for a few days and then Bologna.
In Tuscany, he'll be stopping at a winery that his company represents. It’s not one of my favorite producers, nor is it his.
“They’re turning things around,” he said, pumping the arms of the elliptical machine, while glancing at recipes from the morning newspaper’s food section.
“They’ve been turning things around for 20 years,” I said, taking a jab at my friend.
“I know,” he said, “but the last five years they’ve really pulled things together.”
“Well, I never liked the wines that much,” I replied.
“Me neither,” my friend countered, now smiling. “I’ve always liked the cheaper stuff more than the expensive stuff.”
Once you recognize and appreciate that expensive wines are not always better then less expensive ones—that the $25 wine can be superior to the $75 reserve—you’ve crossed an important psychological barrier.
If you assess wines by your taste, and ignore prices, you’ll save yourself lots of money and aggravation.
