Haaaaaa. Steak, frites and Bordeaux. Sometimes there’s nothing better than a simple steak, French fries and a green salad with a good bottle of Bordeaux. And I am not talking about first-growth or second-growth or trophy reds from France’s premier wine region. You don’t have to talk to your banker to buy and drink the Bordeaux I am talking about. It’s the stuff we can all afford on a regular basis, like the bottles I wrote about in the current issue of Spectator ("50 Best Bordeaux Below $50").
I was thinking about that when it was snowing like mad in Manhattan, and executive editor Tom Mathews and I snuck out for a quick steak and frites lunch at Les Halles, just down the street from the office. It is all faux French, but I have to say, I had a déjà vu feeling hanging with Tom. We had many good times in France doing the same thing—enjoying simple food and good Bordeaux in bistros. In fact, we once reviewed every three-star restaurant in France in one month together. But that’s another story. Maybe a book?
“Pick a Bordeaux, like old times,” said Tom, after we ordered our steaks.
I chose a 2003 Chateau Marquis d'Alesme Becker. It is a vintage I like a lot, as you know. The wine was soft, round and delicious with lots of raspberry and blackberry character with a hint of minerals. It was delicious now, very good quality. In fact, there’s not much use in waiting to open it.
The delicious Bordeaux cut through the steak like a sharp Laguiole knife. Its clean fruit and fine tannins refreshed my palate before every subsequent bite of beef. Deeelicious. And it’s what Bordeaux does so well.
