I drink a lot of Chilean wine while I am in Latin America. It always seems to be available. It’s well-priced, and the quality is very good. It also seems pretty indestructible, even in the face of the heat and humidity that characterize the places I travel to, like Cuba or Nicaragua, for Wine Spectator’s sister publication, Cigar Aficionado.
For example, I drank a bottle of 2002 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto Marqués de Casa Concha last night that cost me 14 bucks at a new deluxe beach resort called Paradisus Rio de Oro, near Holguin, in the northeastern part of Cuba. It was fruity, juicy, soft and satisfying. 87 points, non-blind. I also had a bottle of the 2001 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto Don Melchor (I gave it 92 points) that was drinking well, and it was still $45 on the wine list of the Alijbe restaurant in Havana. The fresh, floral currant and berry character with firm tannins and fresh acidity cut through the moist and almost decadent roasted chicken.
Chile is one of the best sources in the world for reasonably priced wines, from Cabernet to Sauvignon Blanc. But I haven’t been that excited about the high-end wines, other than Don Melchor, Viña Almaviva Puente Alto and Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta Colchagua. By comparison, I find Argentina much more exciting for serious bottles, and the country seems to be on a roll, coming out with new and exciting world-class wines every year.
Are you more excited about Chile or Argentina for producing great wines?
