All was quiet on the Western Front. (At least at 5 pm today in mainland Europe.) No more big names were released on the market from Bordeaux. Everyone is still waiting for the rest of the first growths – Latour, Margaux, Lafite and Mouton – to come out with their prices.
Apparently many wines sold well this week even though they were very expensive, including the likes of Palmer and Angelus that more than doubled their prices. Other top wines that had large price increases were less popular, according to sources, including Ducru (I don’t know why? It’s superb), Pavie, and Larcis Ducasse. In fact, I rated all these wines 95-100.
One problem with all this is that I am still not 100 percent sure about the American consumer response to 2005 Bordeaux. My sources are all in the trade from chateau owners to wine merchants in Europe and America. The end consumer is the one who counts, and that still a bit of an unknown for many.
I am thinking that many have the view of David Zajac:
"My original hit list of wines I wanted, in 6 bottle increments, was 14, however, because of the prices I have cut that list to 9, much less than what I have purchased in the past. I have plenty of wine, so its not a big deal that I am losing out on these other 5 wines, its like so many people are saying, where is the value? Is Papa Clement a value at $150/bottle? One of my favorite wines is Troplong Mondot, I literally purchased the 2003 for $29.99/bottle and wanted some of the 2005 as well....but not at $160/bottle, or more than five times what I paid for the 2003. Forts des Latour at $100 - no way, they can keep it. When a somewhat well off person can't afford to purchase their wines anymore, they sure better be good at courting the millionaires!"
