It had to happen. Château Malescot-St.-Exupéry, the Margaux wine estate, released its 2005 on the market today at more than double last year’s price. It went from about $18 a bottle from the chateau for the 2004 to about $38 for the 2005.
I spoke to a number of wine merchants in Bordeaux and they said that the wine sold well, regardless of the mega-increase. And I have to say that the 2005 Malescot is gorgeous. I gave it 95-100 points from barrel. But I hope that this does not set a trend for the top wines. U.S. consumers will probably have to pay between $70 and $80 a bottle for the 2005 Malescot.
Stephen Browett of London’s Farr Vintners, arguably the biggest trader in the world of fine Bordeaux, said that he was going to have to sell Malescot 2005 for more than the 2000 – which is already in bottle! And he was very concerned that other top named Bordeaux would follow Malescot.
Not a good idea. Châteaus should remember that they will have other vintages of Bordeaux to sell in the future – and yes, it is very likely a number will be as good or better than 2005 – so prudence in pricing is recommend. Or to put it more bluntly, don’t be stupid, Bordeaux! Consumers have long memories, and if they overpay for 2005, they are not going to be happy in the future.
