I've toyed with saying this, but have always opted not to, instead pretending that the Paris Tasting of 1976 never happened.
But with all the renewed publicity, especially with a big-city California newspaper dedicating three full pages of its wine section to covering the re-enactment of the event two weeks ago, I can no longer remain silent.
Let's call the 30th anniversary re-enactment what it really is – a Hollywood stunt.
I thought it was a stunt the first time in 1976. Back then, I didn't pay much attention, as I knew the parties involved and thought they had an agenda.
Why did they do it in the first place? What did they have to gain then?
It was clear to me they wanted to attract attention for themselves and the wines involved were their puppets.
If the French wines had won, big deal, who would care?
But if the California wines won, then maybe the event would attract attention. What a surprise, the California wines won!
Thanks to Time picking up the results (and that reporter later writing a book about it), the first tasting turned into a major PR event for California wine and the individual wines involved. And trust me – the promoters of the event will want to continue to keep this drama alive whenever an anniversary arrives in the decades to come.
To the California wineries involved, they could not lose and they didn’t.
To the French wine producers, they could not win (and they didn't).
Great public relations. Great propaganda! A well-done stunt.
