Just tasted a tiny selection of some 2005 Mosels and...WOW. I am in Zurich for a couple of days, and my friend Beat Caduff, of Caduff's Wine Loft, served us some killer Rieslings. He says that 2005 is the best vintage he has ever tasted in the 15 years he has been traveling to Germany to taste young wines from vat and cask. (He brought these barrel samples from his trip last week for me to taste.)
“They have high must weights and high acidity,” he said. “I think it is 1971. I have never seen anything like it. I have been going to Germany tasting young wines for the last 15 years, and I taste 700 wines each year. I have never seen anything like 2005.”
I can’t generalize, since I have only tasted a few wines, but the few I did taste were very impressive.
I absolutely loved the Auslese Gold Capsule 2005 I tasted from Zilliken. Here is my note:
Very focused with mineral, apple, lemon and hints of flowers. Full bodied, and super powerful. Medium sweet but intense and flavorful with huge tangy acidity. A live wire of a wine.
I also was blown away by a Schloss Saarstein TBA:
This is incredible. Full and powerful with layers of dried pineapple and apricots on the palate. Super fresh and balanced. Super long. Bright and tart acidity. Almost sweet and sour.
I obviously did not taste these wines blind, but if I had to rate them, I would put them in the high 90s. (I rated German wines for the magazine from the 1984 vintage to 1993.)
German wines, particularly Rieslings, can be amazing. I still have a number of Ausleses in my cellar from the 1971, 1976 and 1983 vintages, and they are fresh and lively – beautiful bottles. Will the 2005s turn out to be the same?
Beat thinks so. And so do the producers, according to him. “Look how great the 1971 are now?"
I guess I am going to have to find some money to buy 2005 Germans as well as Bordeaux...
