Items From Down Under

A few items from my beats…

• At Matetic, which has been impressive in its first few years, another young winemaker is taking over. Paula Cardenas, 33, will be replacing Rodrigo Soto when the harvest finishes up. Cardenas has worked at Chile's Viña Carmen, Viña Errázuriz and William Cole, as well as at Thelema in South Africa.

• As for the harvest in Chile, things are running a couple of weeks late due to a cold spring. But warm days in March and April (remember their seasons are the reverse of ours) have produced ripe grapes - now the vintners need to get everything in before the weather deteriorates.

• In Argentina, vintners are calling '06 a mix of '03 and '04. It was dry and hot again, but the nights were cooler during the last two months. The harvest is running about a week late (no worries), and folks are very optimistic.

• And in my other Southern Hemisphere region, the South Africans are cooing over 2006. Dry and warm through the summer, with slightly smaller berries and reduced yields. Things look great, though it's very early.

After everything is picked and things have settled down, I'll report more in depth on 2006 in these areas...

James, as for the '06 vintage in Argentina being a mix between '03 and '04 do you have any feel for what varietals will be best? Thanks!
