Executive Editor, New York

Tasting Beat: Spain, New York

My passion for wine began when I picked grapes in Bordeaux during the 1979 vintage and matured while I worked as a wine buyer for New York restaurants The Odeon and Café Luxembourg in the 1980s.

I joined Wine Spectator in 1988 as a reporter in the London office. At the time, I was freelancing from a small town near Bordeaux. In 1989, I moved to New York and was promoted to senior editor. In 1999 I became the magazine’s executive editor, and I now oversee a staff of 40 writers, editors and art directors for both print and Internet operations, based in New York and Napa Valley.

I am the lead taster for the wines of Spain and one of the magazine’s principal restaurant reviewers and travel writers.

I've lived in Spain, France and England, and have degrees from Bennington College and Yale University. My wife Sara, a photographer, and I live in Brooklyn. In 1993, I published A Village in the Vineyards, an account of our experiences in France.
