General manager and winemaker, Bergström Winery

Tasting Beat: Guest blogger

I've been general manager, winemaker and vineyard manager for Bergström Winery, my family's domaine in Oregon's Willamette Valley, since 1999. We make about 10,000 cases a year of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling from estate and purchased fruit. We farm our 40 acres of estate vineyards biodynamically and have three sites—one in Dundee Hills and two in the Chehalem Mountains appellation.

After working for some of Oregon's finest domaines in 1997 and 1998 as an undergraduate student, I traveled to Beaune, in France's Burgundy region, where I completed a postgraduate program in viticulture and enology prior to returning to Oregon with my wife, Caroline, for Bergström Winery's inaugural vintage.

I have helped to plant and manage several vineyards in Oregon's Willamette Valley and have consulted on the winemaking and viticulture at several Oregon upstart wine labels over the past 11 years. Among my new projects is Trisaetum, owned by the Frey family. (Read Harvey Steiman's blog about it). I am 33 years old, and 2008 will mark my 12th vintage as an Oregon winemaker.
