First, a confession. I love maps. The first extra application I installed on my handheld PDA was Google Maps. I also drive this magazine's art department nuts with my corrections for maps we publish, as in, "No, this dot should be about 1/8 inch to the right, and just a tad down.

The phone rang in the next room. I put down the bottle of wine I was pondering in my wine cellar, and rushed to get the call. My friend Leonard wanted to know what time to arrive on Thanksgiving. He, his wife and daughter were joining us.

Every time I stick my nose over a glass of Riesling, I feel a little smug. Riesling falls into the category known as aromatic whites, and those of us who like them can sometimes feel like we're in a tight little club.

I could not wait to slap the new Ratatouille DVD into my player and watch it, not so much to see the extraordinarily good animated film again, but for the extras. In particular, I wanted to see how chef Thomas Keller came up with the updated version of the vegetable dish that was central to the film's denouement.

Michelin had planned on Monday, November 12 to announce the top restaurants in its first-ever restaurant guides to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, but word leaked out early thanks to a glitch on the company's web site.

In the past few months pizza has popped up more often on my radar. Is it just me or is the world of pizza (and wines to order with them) getting more interesting? • A new pizzeria called Gialina opened in my neighborhood in San Francisco, making a crisp, Neapolitan style.

The rains started on Friday, September 28. I was tasting wine with Luisa Ponzi at her family's winery outside Portland, Ore. when a series of showers dampened her spirits. She admitted to being nervous.
