This is the second installment of two German tastings I attended recently in New York. Two major importers were previewing the 2008 vintage, among other years. I arrived late to the Terry Theise tasting at Tribeca Grill, so was unable to taste through everything I wanted, but did get a good impression of several growers.

I have now had a good preview of the 2008 vintage for German Riesling, having tasted more than 100 during the past week. Two major importers of German wines, Rudi Wiest and Terry Theise, held tastings of their growers' wines a week apart in New York.

File this under global warming: Balthasar Ress , the well-known estate in Germany’s Rheingau region, recently planted a vineyard at 55 degrees latitude on the island of Sylt, in the North Sea. Just to get our bearings, this is as far north in Germany as one can go, almost at the border of Denmark.

An elite group of Burgundy producers is making four special wines from the 2009 harvest. The proceeds will benefit charities operating in the Côte d’Or, the heart of Burgundy’s vineyard land. The project, called Les Climats du Coeur, will offer 1,000 cases of four magnums each.

Louis-Fabrice Latour is in the United States this week, rolling out his 2007 white Burgundies. To date, he has been to Illinois, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York. Critical to his release strategy is a price reduction.

I received an announcement this morning from the Hugel family in Alsace that their beloved Jean Hugel had passed away. I didn’t really know "Johnny", as he was called, having met him only a few times; Jean retired from running the family business in 1997, the year I began my Alsace beat.

Olivier Humbrecht stopped by Wine Spectator ’s offices recently to show me and my colleague Alison Napjus the range of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht ’s new releases, primarily from the 2007 vintage. Humbrecht and I have been sitting down to taste through the new vintage of Zind-Humbrecht's multiple cuvées each year for the past 8 years, beginning with the 2000 vintage.
