Just before I left for my recent vacation, I sat down with Pascal Jolivet. The Loire vintner wanted to show me a small vertical of one of his top single-vineyard bottlings of Sancerre, Le Chêne Marchand.

One item to file, and that clears off my desk just in time for my vacation: David Finlayson , head winemaker at Glen Carlou , has resigned his position there and will now focus solely on his own Finlayson Family label.

There’s been quite a dust-up in the blogosphere lately about ethics among wine writers. The discussions have focused on what perks wine writers accept during the course of their work, and at what point these perks compromise the integrity and independence of the writers.

I got caught up with Bruwer Raats yesterday. He’s the owner and winemaker at Raats Family , located in Stellenbosch, South Africa. He currently produces about 9,000 cases annually, and sends about 4,000 to the U.
