The Joy of Aromatic Whites

Every time I stick my nose over a glass of Riesling, I feel a little smug. Riesling falls into the category known as aromatic whites, and those of us who like them can sometimes feel like we're in a tight little club. While most of the wine world looks to Chardonnay for a white wine with depth and distinction, or so it seems, those of us who enjoy other white wines can spend less for as much pleasure. Read more

Napa's Corra Cabernet Takes Flight

It’s not much wine but it will do. One barrel of 2006 Sauvignon Blanc and 11 barrels of 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, but that’s enough to get Celia Welch Masyczek’s new label, Corra, off the ground.

I consider Masyczek one of California’s best winemakers. Read more

Truffle Tales

Sometimes I have to wonder what all the fuss is about with white truffles. Yes, the ultra-expensive fungi from Italy. Don’t get me wrong. They smell absolutely decadent and seductive, and shaving them on to many different things is as much fun as eating them. Read more

A Day With Wine, Vineyards and Winemakers

Yesterday I did what some people think I do every day. I hung out with winemakers.

At 9 a.m. I met Celia Welch Masyczek to barrel sample her 2006 Corra Napa Valley Cabernet (more on Corra tomorrow), and then, since she’s making her wine at Keever, a new winery in Yountville, I met the Keevers, toured their winery, saw their vineyard and tasted their wines. Read more

Animation, Cooking and Rats

I could not wait to slap the new Ratatouille DVD into my player and watch it, not so much to see the extraordinarily good animated film again, but for the extras. In particular, I wanted to see how chef Thomas Keller came up with the updated version of the vegetable dish that was central to the film's denouement. Read more

Finishing Where I Started

On this trip, I finished up where I started. My final visit was in Cornas again, this time with Jean-Luc and Anne Colombo. Before tasting though, I headed out into the brisk mistral with Cyril Courvoisier, the young vineyard manager for Jean-Luc Colombo, and Julien Revillon, who manages just about everything else for the hyperkinetic Colombo. Finding the Invisible In Wine

I had lunch a few weeks ago with Richard Geoffroy, the erudite and fascinating chef de cave of Moët & Chandon’s Cuvée Dom Pérignon. He had organized a tasting for me to showcase some recent vintages, some of which will be designated for the Oenothèque program, along with some current and past Oenothèque bottlings. Read more

More Day 10: Seeing the Changes at Paul Jaboulet Aîné

There’s been a lot of change at Paul Jaboulet Aîné since Jean-Jacques Frey, owner of Château La Lagune and Champagne Billecart Salmon acquired the winery in 2006.

The initial plan to keep Laurent Jaboulet on as winemaker was quickly scrapped—Jaboulet was let go in August of 2006 in a move that raised a few eyebrows in the valley. Read more

Taste Memories Can Be Fond or Fowl

Where do we come up with some of our wine descriptors? Many of our taste memories are tied to our youth and early taste sensations and they stick with us. I can still think back to feeding ducks and geese as a kid, and later with my own kids, and I know a duck pond when I smell it. Read more

Day 10: One More Stop in Crozes

Domaine Combier is now run by Laurent Combier, a third-generation vigneron. His grandfather started with a few vines along with apricot trees, and when the canal at Roche-de-Glun opened in the early '60s, he crossed the river to expand his holdings. Read more
