The Grands Crus of Vosne-Romanée
Posted: 02:14 AM ET, 01/18/08
Tuesday afternoon I was in Vosne-Romanée to visit Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, then to Beaune for a look at the 2006s from négociant Alex Gambal.
One of my favorite stops in January is the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, where the wines are strictly grands crus, from some of the best terroirs. Read more

Last Night’s Flat Champagne
Posted: 06:15 PM ET, 01/17/08
Is it only me, or does anyone else get ripped off late at night in bars? I pulled in with a friend of mine last night to the bar at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills after a fabulous dinner at Il Grano in West Los Angeles for a late-night glass of Champagne, and we got totally fleeced. Read more

Tried or Not, They've Got Opinions
Posted: 05:50 PM ET, 01/17/08
While my colleague Harvey Steiman wonders whether people really understand the diversity of Australian wine, I have another somewhat related question.
One reason, if not the main one, that people don’t understand Australian wines is they either haven’t tried enough of them, or they have a mindset that stereotypes the wines. Read more

A Couple Sit-Downs with Francisco Baettig and Adolfo Hurtado
Posted: 02:44 PM ET, 01/17/08
I sat down with two different Chilean winemakers over the last week—Francisco Baettig of Viña Errázuriz and Adolfo Hurtado of Viña Cono Sur, both of whom have interesting stories to tell.
Cleaning up at Errázuriz
For Baettig, his story has been one of overcoming hurdles. Read more

What Do You REALLY Think of Australian Wine?
Posted: 01:48 PM ET, 01/17/08
What is it going to take for Americans to truly understand Australian wine? I ask this with all seriousness, because some of the most sophisticated wine drinkers I know still think Australia is nothing but big, fat, overpriced Shiraz and cheap, easy-drinking quaffers. Read more

First Growth 2000 Dinner in Bordeaux
Posted: 02:28 PM ET, 01/16/08
I hosted a dinner in Bordeaux before Christmas at the hotel Les Sources de Caudalie, for the winemakers of four of the five first growths, as well as Alain Vautier of Ausone, which in effect is a first growth. We were talking about the glorious 2005 vintage but they also brought their 2000s to taste together as a reference points. Read more

Harlan '97 Cabernet Polarizing to Harlan Too
Posted: 03:46 PM ET, 01/15/08
Bill Harlan extended an invitation to meet over lunch after the holidays. "No agenda," he said, "let's just catch up."
Luckily for me I had a topic in mind and Harlan was more than game. Yesterday’s visit at Julia’s Kitchen in Napa provided the perfect opportunity to talk about the 1997 Harlan Estate Napa Valley Cabernet. Read more

A Culinary Tundra Continues to Thaw
Posted: 12:33 PM ET, 01/15/08
With the Green Bay Packers going deep into the NFL playoffs, I couldn’t help but draw a comparison between their home field, Lambeau Field, and the culinary landscape of the New York's Upper West Side. Both have been known as a "frozen tundra" for quite a while (though Packer fans, please note that by definition, tundra is frozen). Read more
