Glitz-Free Food in Miami
Posted: 04:36 PM ET, 02/07/08
I lived in Miami for seven years in the 1970s, and still have friends there to visit. So when my travels took me there last week, I phoned my friends Rich and Wendy to schedule a dinner out. Turns out one of the restaurants with the biggest buzz is only a few blocks from where they live, just off Biscayne Bay in a quiet northeastern neighborhood. Read more

Island Wines

Does good wine taste great when you drink it somewhere you don’t expect to drink it? Yes. Oh yes. Definitely yes.
I went to a small restaurant in the suburbs of Havana a couple of nights ago, La Paila, and we came across a bottle of 2004 Bodegas Mauro Viño de la Tierra de Castilla y León. Read more

Steep Price Might Be a Record for Napa Cabernet Land
Posted: 03:42 PM ET, 02/06/08
This might be one for the record books.
There have been bigger land deals in Napa Valley, both in terms of acreage and total value.
But depending on how you massage the figures, Jayson Woodbridge’s purchase of the Pickett Road Vineyard in California's Napa Valley this week goes down as one of the most expensive per-acre vineyard acquisitions in Napa history. Read more

Flying Winemaker for a Day
Posted: 10:36 AM ET, 02/06/08
James Molesworth, Flying Winemaker. I kind of like the sound of that. No, I don’t have any delusions of grandeur, and I also happen to still like my day job. But still, "Flying Winemaker," even for a day? It’s worth a shot.
So with that in mind, I hopped the early flight yesterday morning from New York to San Francisco and then took a 10-minute cab ride to the custom crush facility where I’ve been making my own barrel of Syrah from the 2007 vintage. Read more

The Indefatigable Etienne de Montille
Posted: 10:14 AM ET, 02/06/08
One of my last visits in Burgundy was with Etienne de Montille of Domaine de Montille, Deux Montille (the négociant business he runs with his sister Alix) and Domaine du Château de Puligny-Montrachet, where he is the estate manager.
De Montille has just finished reorganizing the domaine, where he and Alix are now the owners. Read more

A New Sonoma Label wIth Zesty Wines
Posted: 01:36 PM ET, 02/05/08
It came down to this. When Charlie Dollbaum wanted to start his own commercial winery, after making homemade wines for years, he turned to a friend, Dick Keenan, who had what he thought was an excellent vineyard. According to Dollbaum, an oncologist, he "begged" Keenan, an attorney, to sell him his grapes. Read more

A Vote for Australian Chardonnay
Posted: 02:46 PM ET, 02/04/08
Aside from California Cabernets (which James Suckling, James Laube and James Molesworth have all commented on in their blogs), we also tried some Chardonnays on our editors' retreat last week, courtesy of tasting director Bruce Sanderson. He poured us 2005s from Paul Hobbs and Peter MIchael in California and Puligny-Folatières from Jadot in Burgundy, but the one that woke everyone up and got a conversation going was—surprise!—from Australia. Sure, Screw Caps Are Fine—But on My Wines?
Posted: 01:30 PM ET, 02/04/08
I realize this subject has been done to death, but I thought I'd try it on and see how it fits. The subject is screw caps, synthetic corks and TCA. Personally I don't mind synthetic corks or screw caps on wine that I plan on plowing through at the speed of light. Read more

The Best Form of Education
Posted: 04:23 PM ET, 02/03/08
Education comes in many forms—literature, film, etc. And often education comes in a predictable format or setting, such as the classroom, whereby you know what to expect.
But for me, the best education is more than just seeing or hearing. Read more

Nostalgia Has Its Limits with Older Wines
Posted: 01:42 PM ET, 01/31/08
Wine Spectator's senior editors blind tasted a series of old California reds this week, and the tasting, about which James Suckling has also written, demonstrated how well most of these wines aged.
Our editors agreed on a few stars. Read more
