Ethereal Joy of L'Eglise Clinet
Posted: 11:30 AM ET, 07/02/09
Denis Durantou is one of my favorite winemakers in Bordeaux. He is eccentric and passionate, and his Pomerol estate, L'Église Clinet, makes wonderfully fragrant and beautifully proportioned reds from about 85 percent Merlot and the remainder in Cabernet Franc. Read more

Celebrating Freedom In Freedom With Yankee Wines
Posted: 04:10 PM ET, 07/01/09
I’m Freedom-bound for the Fourth of July weekend, as in Freedom, Calif. I’m not sure Freedom is even a town (it’s in Amador County, in the Sierra foothills), but it has a post office (and boxes) and my friends have a home there where we're spending the holiday. Read more

NZ's Best? Hint: Not a Sauvignon or a Pinot
Posted: 11:23 AM ET, 07/01/09
When you mention New Zealand in a wine conversation, no doubt the first thing that comes to mind is Sauvignon Blanc. Indeed, the country has hung its hat on the tangy, bright, zingy wines that come out of the Marlborough region. Those Sauvignons are good and there are plenty of them. Read more

All Six Kanzler Pinots Show The Vineyard's Personality
Posted: 01:51 PM ET, 06/30/09
If you gave five different winemakers the same grapes from the same vineyard, you’d end up with five different wines (or in this case six, since one winemaker made two bottlings). And you would expect that all of the wines would achieve a consistent level of quality and offer a thread of continuity, or expression of the site, in keeping with the theory of terroir. Read more

A Spätlese Vintage: Part II
Posted: 09:20 AM ET, 06/30/09
This is the second installment of two German tastings I attended recently in New York. Two major importers were previewing the 2008 vintage, among other years.
I arrived late to the Terry Theise tasting at Tribeca Grill, so was unable to taste through everything I wanted, but did get a good impression of several growers. Read more

America the Beautiful in Bordeaux
Posted: 08:46 AM ET, 06/30/09
A lot of the cool things that happen during VinExpo go on before, during and after the event, in châteaus throughout the region. A couple of days before the fair, I was lucky enough to spend some time at Château Haut-Bailly, the small jewel of a wine estate in the Pessac-Léognan district. Read more

The Finger Lakes, Day 3: From Seneca to Cayuga and Beyond
Posted: 11:11 AM ET, 06/27/09
As you drive out from Watkins Glen and up the east side of Seneca past the scenic Hector Falls, you start to run along a stretch of some of the region’s best-known wineries in an area known as 'the banana belt' for it's riper-styled wines – Standing Stone, Atwater Estate, Red Newt. Read more

Consider Wine Styles Like Fashion
Posted: 01:56 PM ET, 06/26/09
In talking about wine styles, and why and when they change, I usually turn to the analogies of popular music or fashion. I ask people to walk into their closet and examine their wardrobe, and think about when and why they bought a shirt or jacket, and which are their favorite items, or the ones they never wear. Final Word on the Plastic Wrap Remedy
Posted: 12:06 PM ET, 06/26/09
Sorry for the delay. Weeks ago I promised another look at a purported solution for cork-tainted wines, soaking them with plastic wrap. I have been tasting mostly Australian wines recently, and so many of those smart Aussies have abandoned corks in favor of screw caps that unambiguously cork-tainted bottles have been rare. Read more

A Spätlese Vintage: Part I
Posted: 03:16 PM ET, 06/25/09
I have now had a good preview of the 2008 vintage for German Riesling, having tasted more than 100 during the past week. Two major importers of German wines, Rudi Wiest and Terry Theise, held tastings of their growers' wines a week apart in New York. Read more
