Q: I frequently have stomach pain due to various gastro-related problems. However, I love wine and usually have one glass a day with my dinner. Can this wine consumption contribute to or intensify my problems?—Katya

A:Studies have shown that drinking wine does not exacerbate gastro esophageal reflux disease, and even helps to rid the body of the bacteria thought to cause peptic ulcers. In addition, the responsible consumption of wine is normally associated with a beneficial role in digestion, especially when consumed with meals. This is a general rule of thumb, however, and may not be applicable to a specific disorder. There may be cause for concern if pain is felt in the stomach immediately after the consumption of one glass of wine. You should ask your doctor about how wine relates to your particular gastro-related problems.
