Cuba Pounded by Second Hurricane in Eight Days

With waves higher than two-story buildings and winds of 125 miles per hour, Hurricane Ike swept across Cuba from east to west yesterday, killing four people, according to news reports. Only eight days ago, Hurricane Gustav came ashore in Pinar del Río with even more powerful winds.
As this story was published, a weakened Ike had emerged just offshore Cuba’s southern coast and was expected to move northwest across the island near Pinar del Río, not far from where Gustav cut a swath of destruction through some of Cuba’s tobacco-growing region. Cuba’s western provinces were under a hurricane warning.
