Tip of the Week

Q: Cuban Montecristos have quite a number of sizes. Was it always that way?

A: No — in the 1950s, there were only a handful of sizes.

We spoke with Benjamin Menendez, whose father, Alonso, made the Montecristo brand in Havana.

"During my time, Montecristo had six sizes," says Menendez. They were the No. 1 through the No. 5, plus the Tubo. The longest was the No. 1, a lonsdale, and the No. 2, a pyramid, was the fattest. The nine-inch Monte "A," the lancero-shaped Especiale and all others were created after the revolution.
